What happens
Insulation deterioration can create shorted turns or an unwanted path between windings or frame, increasing heat and reducing useful output.
Typical symptoms
Burnt odor, discoloration, protective trips or abnormal heating even after downstream loads are ruled out.
Checks that distinguish this cause
Stop using visibly damaged equipment. A qualified technician separates external load faults from internal problems using the transformer manufacturer's test procedure. Simple continuity cannot prove insulation health or reliably detect shorted turns.
What can look similar
Normal magnetizing hum is not by itself a failure. Overload or incorrect primary wiring can overheat a healthy winding.
Repair direction
Replace the confirmed damaged transformer and correct its loading, input and environment.
Verify the repair
Confirm approved output, current and temperature behavior during sustained operation.
Equipment-specific limits
Read the primary taps, secondary rating, VA capacity and protection arrangement. A normal unloaded voltage can differ from the rated loaded voltage. There is no universal winding-resistance value.
