Wrong capacitance or terminal wiring

A replacement does not match the required capacitance or its common, fan and compressor connections are misidentified.

What happens

A replacement does not match the required capacitance or its common, fan and compressor connections are misidentified.

Typical symptoms

Poor performance or repeat motor heating after a capacitor repair.

Checks that distinguish this cause

Compare the motor and equipment specifications with the installed label and diagram. Isolate, discharge and trace each lead rather than relying on its color.

What can look similar

A correct capacitor does not resolve a supply fault or damaged winding.

Repair direction

Install the approved rating and correct wiring. A higher voltage rating does not justify changing required capacitance.

Verify the repair

Verify both motors and both sections of a dual capacitor where used.

Equipment-specific limits

Use the OEM capacitance, tolerance, voltage rating and terminal arrangement. ECM and inverter motors have different electronics; this procedure is not a universal motor test.

Practice this diagnosis

These simulated calls exercise this component or repair family. The article describes a broader diagnostic process; a call may represent a different cause within that family.
